We are here to bust this myth and explain the facts about men’s skincare and how it is different. Firstly, it is not the same as women’s skin. They have thicker, denser skin with comparably more numbers of pores and sebaceous glands. They also have 25 percent more collagen, which makes the process of wrinkle formation a bit late than usual for women. A more extensive number of pores is the reason why most men suffer from oily, acne-prone skin.
Acne can also be caused by shaving frequently. When the blade glides on the skin, it removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, disrupting the protective barrier. The stratum corneum (outermost layer of skin) is known as the protective barrier. It consists of a lipid layer similar to mortar which keeps our skin safe from invading pathogens. When it gets disrupted, bacteria like P. acnes and dirt particles start invading the layers of the skin resulting in pimples and blackheads formation. Even if you don’t shave frequently, oil on your skin can still become a cause of clogging the pores as it attracts dirt and pollution.
Another reason why men’s skin is prone to acne and pimples is when the shaved hairs start growing internally, in other words, known as ingrown hairs. They are a leading cause of cystic acne, which is filled with pus and is painful.
Furthermore, if we talk about the fact that men have more collagen (a building block of skin) in their skin makes us think their skin will be less prone to forming wrinkles and will be more elastic and firm. It means that it will take more time for their skin to age and become saggy compared to women. But unfortunately, due to lack of care, even though the process itself delays, skin still starts aging, and in this case, deeper wrinkles form. These wrinkles are hard to prevent and don’t fade away smoothly. The skin is more prone to getting saggy, and dark circles form. It is all due to the lack of care and knowledge.
Skincare has always been thought to be specified for women. But it is important for men as well. Men’s skin is more frequently exposed to the Sun and pollution as they spend more time outside. It is why even more care is required. If proper care is taken from the start, it avoids future complications of the skin.
